The architecture is straightforward. Claude Code CLI runs on your machine as normal. Instead of connecting directly to Anthropic's API, it connects through a local proxy that routes requests to Owl Alpha on OpenRouter. The proxy handles authentication, request formatting, and response translation so Claude Code works exactly as expected. From your perspective, nothing changes — you open your terminal, type your prompt, and the agent does the work.

Multi-provider failover is available in the Full Sovereign package, so if Owl Alpha is unavailable, the stack automatically falls back to another free model without interrupting your workflow.
Security is handled through local API keys that never leave your machine. The proxy encrypts all traffic between your machine and OpenRouter. Your code, your data, and your prompts stay under your control at all times.
Is this legal? Yes. OpenRouter's free models are offered at no cost by their providers. You're using a legitimate API endpoint, just routing through a different provider than the default Anthropic one.
What's the catch? The free models are slightly less capable than the latest paid Claude models for complex reasoning tasks. For most business automation, content generation, and coding tasks, the difference is negligible. For cutting-edge research or highly complex multi-step reasoning, you may notice a gap. Can I switch back to paid Claude later? Absolutely. The proxy is a configuration layer, not a lock-in. If you decide you need the latest Claude model for a specific project, you can switch the endpoint back to Anthropic's API in seconds. Your setup, your memory, and your workflow remain intact.
